Job Summary:
The Transportation Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of passengers, crew members, and airport facilities by implementing and enforcing established security protocols and procedures. As a member of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Transportation Security Officer contributes to maintaining public confidence in the transportation system.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform security screening of individuals, personal belongings, and carry-on baggage using x-ray machines, metal detectors, and other screening equipment.
2. Conduct physical searches of individuals when necessary, adhering to established protocols and providing clear instructions to the person being screened.
3. Identify and resolve security-related issues, including prohibited items, potential threats, and suspicious activities, promptly and appropriately.
4. Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with passengers, providing clear and concise instructions and responding to inquiries or concerns.
5. Monitor the security checkpoint area to prevent unauthorized access and ensure compliance with established security procedures.
6. Collaborate with airport staff, law enforcement agencies, and other security personnel to effectively respond to security incidents, emergencies, and potential threats.
7. Document and report security incidents, irregularities, and violations of security procedures, ensuring accurate and detailed records are maintained.
8. Stay updated on the latest security regulations, procedures, and technologies, attending training sessions and participating in ongoing professional development activities as required.
9. Operate and maintain security equipment, such as x-ray machines, metal detectors, and explosive detection systems, following established maintenance and calibration procedures.
10. Adhere to all TSA policies, rules, and regulations, including confidentiality and privacy requirements, to ensure the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. High school diploma or equivalent qualification is required.
2. Must be a United States citizen, at least 18 years old, and able to pass a background check, including criminal and credit history.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to provide clear instructions and communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
4. Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-pressure situations while ensuring security and compliance with established protocols.
5. Strong attention to detail and observational skills to identify potential security threats and irregularities.
6. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adapt to changing priorities, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
7. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in using security screening equipment and software.
8. Ability to work shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
9. Physical fitness to perform the essential functions of the job, including standing for extended periods, bending, lifting, and carrying items up to 50 pounds.
10. Successful completion of TSA's Transportation Security Officer training program and certification.
